Most renewals quietly assume the funding arrangement you already have. Choosing it on purpose is one of the biggest cost levers an employer controls, and it deserves a real comparison every few years.
The carrier sets a fixed premium and takes the claims risk. The most predictable arrangement, and usually the right start for smaller groups. You pay for that certainty in the rate.
A steady monthly payment that behaves like a premium, but built on your own group’s claims. Run better than expected and money can come back at year end; run worse and stop-loss insurance reimburses your company for eligible claims above its attachment points, under the policy’s terms. For many Alabama employers this is the first real alternative worth pricing.
Your company pays claims as they come, usually with stop-loss insurance above a set line. The most control and the most transparency, and the arrangement where an independent advisor earns their keep.
We broker across carriers and across all three arrangements, so the recommendation follows your census and your claims history. Whichever way the numbers point, we show you the math we ran to get there. And the compliance questions that ride along with plan design, from ERISA documents to ACA reporting, live with our compliance practice.
Alabama's small-group market generally covers employers with 2 to 50 employees. Carriers also apply participation rules to take into consideration, which we help you plan around. What changes with size is the funding menu: smaller groups usually start fully insured, and level-funded and self-funded options open up as the group grows.
In many cases all or most of our compensation is paid by the carrier as part of the plan's pricing, and we disclose it to you. However, many groups prefer our consulting fee model, where compensation is removed from the group health plan. The consulting fee usually covers compliance, education and enrollment support, and benefits enrollment systems.
